DIY Dog Collar

So with the addition of a new fur baby came the overwhelming urge to start making her accessories. And with her size it is going to be hard to find items for her so I thought I would just make some. How exciting! In this tutorial we will be making a tiny collar. I will also make a matching leash in another post. And of course I had to go to Joann’s, even though my fabric stash is overflowing. So found this cute unicorn fabric for the collar and I bought a lot of this so I can do other projects that will match. At the end of this post there is a picture of a cute little dress I made using the same material. So let’s make the cooler! You will need to measure your dogs neck. If you are making an adjustable collar, as I am in this tutorial, add the inches that you wish for it to extend to. I will be doing an 11 inch long collar adjustable to 7 inches so in total length I will need 13 long inches to include 1/4 inch seam allowances at the ends. And it will be quit a thin so I will cut the width at 1.5 inches. The end result will be a half inch collar adjustable from 7 to 11 inches.
Amazon links to everything but the fabric not included although you can can find cute fabric on Amazon too.

Collar hardware D rings (I am using half inch hardware) https://amzn.to/4a8aO7a

Half inch clips/buckles https://amzn.to/3vpPH14 Amazon

Lay the fabric right side down. Measure and mark with a pencil your width and length. And cut it out. 13 inches long by 1.5 inches wide. I will be using half inch hardware as well.

Now flip the fabric over and fold wrong sides together to form a 1/4 inch hem. Sew all the way to the bottom.

Do this to both sides. Then fold wrong sides together and line up the edges of your hems. Sew as close to the edge as you can making sure to catch both top and bottom edges.

Now flip it over and sew down the other side. This will help strengthen the fabric and help the collar stay flat.

Now time for the hardware. I am using half inch D rings, half inch clips, and half inch adjusters. First slide one D ring and one side of the clip on the collar. Now fold about an inch and a half of the fabric under so that it reaches just past where you want your D ring to sit. Slide the D ring all the way to the right against the clip. This will keep it out of the way for you to sew the flap down. Once that’s done slide the D ring to the left until it stops and sew on the other side between the D ring and the clip. Now both prices are secure and one side of the collar is done.

On the open end slide the adjuster on first and then the other side of the clip. Like this.

Now pull a good amount out of the top of the adjuster to form a loop. Thread the short end under, up, and back down the inside of the adjuster.

You’re almost done! Now you can either pin this or hold it while it’s going through the sewing machine. But you want to fold the end flap so that it lays against itself past the adjuster. Then sew to secure.

And we are done! Now the collar can be adjusted to whatever size you need. This was fun and I intend to make soooooo many more. Definitely one for each outfit. Think of all the fun you can have dressing up your dog in matching attire. What a posh pooch!

This is the dress I had already made. I used the same fabric and everything. I love making these outfits. They are so fun to create and take no time at all to make.
