Come draw Emily from Corpse Bride

One of my favorite movies by Tim Burton would have to be Corpse Bride. So let’s draw her.

Let’s start the sketch. I decided to draw Emily inside of a victorian frame and because scrollwork is something I have to work on. I measured off an inch from the top and an inch from the bottom and a quarter inch on the sides to make sure that there was enough room for the frame. I then drew a line down the center to make sure that everything was symmetrical. This line is also very important for the second step. After you sketch out one side of the frame, take a piece of tracing paper lay it on top of the frame and trace your piece, make sure that you also trace the center dividing line. Once you’re done tracing your picture, flip the tracing paper over so that the side with the pencil is now facing down on the blank side of your frame line up the center line on the tracing paper with the centerline on the sketch paper. This will ensure that all of the areas meet up perfectly. Now with the pencil or a stylus trace over the top of the tracing paper to transfer the graphite on the other side onto the paper.

I went ahead and did that and sketched out Emily in the center.

Time to color. I started with the frame by first taking a kneaded eraser and going around the frame to lighten up the graphite. And then I took a golden yellow Arteza alcohol marker and filled it in. This will help make sure that there are no white places from the paper coming through when you start using g your colored pencils. Here’s the frame done and Emily had been filled in with alcohol marker as well.

It’s looking great so far! Now it’s time to color Emily. I will be using my prisma color pencils for this.

Let’s start with the shadows.

Now I’m filling in the hair with a base color. I chose to do a very, very dark navy. Finished the eyes and added detail to the veil.

On the next one I colored and added details to the wedding dress and colored her arm bone.

I used a white prisma to draw the hair details.

After refining the drawing I took pink eye shadow and created the pink glow around her. And taking dark blue and black eye shadow I deepened the tones in the vail and on her body and face.

I then used black acrylic paint to black out the surrounding area around the frame. I then finished their picture with a matte varnish.

Viola!
